Environmental Impacts and Financial Modeling of Seabed Mining

Project Lead: Thomas Peacock

Project Description: Professor Thomas Peacock conducts research on the environmental impact of deep-sea mining. The IPL has been working closely with Professor Peacock to identify the implications of his work for regulatory policy by introducing him to policy experts in the field of deep-sea mining and assessing the interests of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), which governs deep-sea mining under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. Professor Peacock now attends the ISA’s annual meeting as an official observer and will host a workshop at MIT that brings together policymakers associated with the ISA, academics, and representatives of the mining industry to identify the most pressing policy questions regarding deep-sea mining.

IPL Support: Logistical support and feedback on presentations.
