Developing policy advice on collector plumes generated by deep-sea mining

Faculy Lead: Thomas Peacock

Project Description: Professor Thomas Peacock conducts research on the environmental impact of deep-sea mining. The Policy Lab has been working closely with Professor Peacock to identify the implications of his work for regulatory policy by introducing him to policy experts in the field of deep-sea mining and assessing the interests of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), which governs deep-sea mining under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea. Professor Peacock now attends the ISA’s annual meeting as an official observer and will be conducting experiments at a major field trial of deep-sea mining collector technology. The results of these experiments will be presented to the International Seabed Authority and other stakeholders.

Policy Lab Support: Editing and drafting reports, logistical support and feedback on presentations.
